CCR task 2

 CCR Task 2

“How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?”

In our opening title sequence, A void, we originally planned for our target audience to be around the age group of 15 - 25 years old as our main character “Jules” is a teenage girl of 16 years old herself. Therefore this would attract a specific target audience considering the fact that we show a stereotypical 16 year old girl in our opening title sequence. We also considered females targeted towards our opening title sequence mainly because our main character is a female however still a mix between both genders. As well as this, we thought of targeting the film to an international level as the genre of our film is a very traditional genre that usually attracts people from everywhere in the world. Psychological thriller is one of the most famous genres in the film industry.  We also thought to target the film to an audience with a higher education and mainly in western countries. As we saw that many of the Swedish and Norwegian thriller movies are doing really well at the moment (Nordic noir) and many production companies are remaking them in their own counties such as the US.

Targeted age category:

- We used a series of casting to engage the audience. In our opening title sequence we used a stereotypical female teenager therefore this would attract the target audience we were aiming for. We showed Jules as a high class teenage girl, by decorating her room with fairy lights as well as using modern day aspects such as a I phone and hints of pink to suggest her gender. As well as this we showed her waking up with light pink pajamas and organization in her room. As for the other characters we also added a stereotypical strict mum which we later on find out is her “fake mom” and a loving care mother which as shown in the flashback is her “real mother”.

- We also used a sort of enigma codes and cliff hangers to engage our target audience following Roland Barths theory. In our opening title sequence we added the transition of a flashback where we find out that young Jules is in trouble and there is another woman with her. This created a mysterious tension and engaged the audience to want to find out more. We ended with a cliff hanger as we thought this would surprise the audience. After the flashback, the opening title sequence immediately ends this suggests fear and something bad is going to happen which was what we were hoping for to engage the audience. As our opening title sequence is a psychological thriller we though adding cliff hangers would catch the viewer off guard and want to keep watching for more.

- For location, we decided to have two very different places to highlight the different representations of characters. As we can tell, Jules wakes up in a very organized and wide bedroom therefore this shows the status she has, a wealthy teenager. From the decoration we can tell this, for example the fact that she has a double bed and a TV as well as cute small decoration and in general the room looks very clean and organized. However for the second location, the lowkey lighting highlights the coldness of the room. In our shot we can’t tell what the apartment looks like due to the closeshots however by the mood and atmosphere of the lights we can tell that both locations are extremely different and this foreshadows what will happen next.

- Our themes for our opening title sequence are considered extremely well known especially for the fact that it is a international genre that mostly a lot of people enjoy. Our opening title sequence themes are physiological thriller, mind perception, routine, abuse etc… We thought that having a generical theme and structure would engage the audience especially psychological thriller fans as this will make them intrigued and surprised for what will happen next.

- In our opening title sequence at the beginning we used a simple morning routine of a teenage girl which started off as slow and continuous to then reveal a shock at the end of the opening title sequence. The mood starts off as relaxed and composed however we can still feel a trembolous  feeling that something bad is going to happen due to the calmness at the beginning. To trigger the flashback we used a prop which was a box full of jewelry which is supposed to be jules’s real mothers jewelry. This therefore triggers the flashback and makes jules fall into the loop. This shows contrast from the beginning to the opening title sequence where everything is calm to the end where we finish with Jules having a mental breakdown and feeling stressed about what she just remembered.

- I think personally we did a good job in engaging our audience, however there are some factors that we could have included in our opening title sequence to improve it and make the audience more intrigued in what will happen. For example, for music, we didn’t include any sounds because we had very restricted time and it was very time consuming to add and find a song as we finished the editing very last minute. Therefore to improve i would have added background music to emphasize the suspicion and mystifying experience as well as build up tension to reach the flashback. As well as this I would have added more sound effects and pleonastic sounds to create a shock to the audience and make them want to know what will happen next. We were successful as we used the Roland Barth theory of enigma codes and left the audience wanting to know more as it was a cliff hanger.

Film Poster for A Void:

- Ive included moments in my poster design to engage the audience, for example, the fact that the main picture for the poster is a young girl walking alone on a field. This makes the audience question and wonder why this girl is alone what happened to her and all these unanswered questions making them want to watch the movie to figure out what has happened to her. As well as this, I included a bold black text to contrast with the light background of the title, this is too aim the eye for the title and notice the name of the film. As the title of the film is called A void this will also make the audience intrigued and question themselves the meaning of this. The quote I added, will also reiterate and stand out for the audience to notice and create an understanding that something happened to this little girl in her childhood which is the whole point of the film.

- In my film poster, i have hinted to moments that would engage our target audience with our poster design.
I have included film festivals my film was nominated in at the top of my poster as well as main characters actors name at the top of my poster, this therefore shows that the film has done well making the audience feel like the movie is good and has done well. As well as this I added light colors and a intriguing picture to engage the audience as this is the first thing a person notices from the poster of the film. The bold headings and the strong title of the film shows a definite film and attracts the audience straight to see the film title.

- The distribution company I would choose for my film is, Picturehouse Entertainemnt. The main reason I would choose this distribution company is mainly for the fact that they have already distributed similar films of the same genre as A Void. Their films are mostly psychological thrillers or horror films which would contribute extremely well with our film. Picturehouse Entertainment release films that serve audiences across the whole UK and in all cinemas nationwide. As our film has a medium budget this would serve great with out produce as it would reach a national and worldwide level. Some of the latest films that Picturehouse Entertainment have released recently are, “happening” “Vortex”and “Nítram”.
