C, E, S, M

Camera, Editing, Sound and Mice en scene.

All meaning and feelings in film are created through these four factors:

Camera: In all film these four areas need to be considered for camera work;

- angle

- movement

- position

- composition

- depth of field

- camera angles

There are many shot types, establishing the shot is mainly the shot which establishes three location, set and the environment where the action will take place. The master shot is where the director returns to break up the action. A close-up focuses and increases the attention of the audience. Mid-shot shows the general action of the movie closeness withought intimacy. This are several important shots in film camera that are basic and very important.

Editing: Editing in film is a process of cutting and assembling film footage to produce a finished product. The role of the film editor includes org sing transitions between shots making decisions about shot duration and maintaining film continuity. As an example in the Shining we spoke about how all the shots are long and create a sense of continuity this is because of the editing creating a sense of a long journey. There’s many techniques in editing such as:

- fade

-dissolve or cross fade

- continuity

- 30 degree rule

Sound: Sound is used a lot in film and it is very important and often goes un-noticed. Sound is used to create a more involving and believable narrative. There is also many sound techniques and these arte some we learned in class:

- sound bridge

- pleonastic sound which is when the sound in the scene is exaggerated. for example in many scenes when people walk the footsteps are exaggerated.

- Parallel sound

- Contrapuntal sound

- It is also important to consider silence and dialogue as this sometimes can be the most effective moment to show case the true emotions and actors feeling in a scene.

Miss en scene:

- production design: location, studio, set design

- Costume and makeup, properties

- Lighting, colour design

Mise en scene is originally a theatre term that is used in media studies meaning staging. It may be described as a expressive tool in classic cinematography. The use of mise en scene is often very symbolic and may be have very several meanings to the audience about a given situation character or location.
